P&O Port opens container freight station at Mundra

P&O Ports, which operates the Mundra International Container Terminal, has opened a new container freight station (CFS) near the port.

Situated less than 2 km from the berth, the CFS spread over 50 acres of land is the largest pure CFS in the country, a P&O Ports official said. Under Phase 1, the CFS will have 4,000 square metres of closed area and two hectares of open land. "The new CFS which started operations on April 5 has already seen huge interest from customers," he added.

Meanwhile, the Mundra terminal handled 14,578 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container cargo in March, overtaking Kandla Port for the first time. Since January, the terminal has handled 34,557 TEUs.

UASC, MSC, Norasia and Messina operate direct weekly services to Europe from Mundra. The direct service operated by UASC also goes to the US East Coast via Europe. Further, MSC and PIL runs two direct weekly African service from Mundra.

The private terminal also provides one direct weekly Far East service operated jointly by PIL, MISC and K Line and two weekly Gulf services run by Simatech.

The service run by the EPIC consortium comprising Contship Container Lines, CMA and P&O Nedlloyd also calls at Mundra port.

OOCL of Hong Kong will also shortly launch a new direct weekly Far East service from Mundra, the official said.
