Hardware Info-Tech - Off-shore Development Moser Baer plans facility in Germany Neha Kaushik
New Delhi , April 14 MOSER Baer, the maker of compact discs and other optical storage media products, is in the process of setting up a manufacturing facility in Germany. "We will be investing about $10 million in the facility, which is expected to come up by early next year in the eastern part of Germany," Mr Ratul Puri, Executive Director, said. The facility will manufacture niche products in the storage media segment for the local European markets. "We found that in the storage media, there is a certain niche market which accounts for maybe about five per cent by volume but about 15-20 per cent by value, a reasonable size business of about $500 million globally." He added: "This market has historically been serviced mainly by Japanese companies and a few US companies. These are very high value-added, high- margin products, which are tough to service from an offshore location. The German facility is being set up with the objective of helping us service the European markets effectively." At the same time, Moser Baer, which has a market share of about 15-20 per cent of the global storage media market, is increasing its focus on the high-growth Asian markets as well. While in the late 90s about 60-70 per cent of the company's export revenues came from Europe, the figure stands at about 30-35 per cent, with the Americas and Asia emerging as the new growth regions. Currently, the company's exports total around Rs 1,500 crore per annum, which translates into about 80 per cent of its total sales. Moser Baer's recent international forays include the setting up of a joint venture with the US-based Imation for R&D (the company also has a $100-million per annum outsourcing tie-up with Imation) and the purchase of a Luxembourg-based company called Capco. According to Mr Puri, Moser Baer is targeting to grow revenues by 30-35 per cent on CAGR basis over the next three years. Also, after doubling its capacity to two billion units recently, the company is set go in for another round of capacity expansion in the current year.
