Sonia flays TDP for neglecting farmers

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , April 15

BOTH the Telugu Desam and the BJP should own responsibility for ``the gross neglect of the farm sector in the country,'' leading to a large number of suicides of farmers, Ms Sonia Gandhi, President of the Congress Party, has alleged.

At a public meeting here on Thursday evening, she said Andhra Pradesh under the TDP rule had the dubious distinction of being at the top of the list and ``therefore, they (the TDP and BJP) do not have any right to talk of a second green revolution''. The groundwork for the first green revolution had been laid by Ms Indira Gandhi during the late sixties and the gains of it had only been frittered away by the NDA, she said.

Similarly, she said, the infrastructure for the IT revolution in the country had been built up by her husband, the late Mr Rajiv Gandhi, but Mr Chandrababu Naidu was claiming the credit for it. She reiterated her party's promise to take up the mega Polavaram project on the Godavari to give a great boost to agriculture in the coastal districts.
