Announcements Industry & Economy - Health Ind-Swift to launch anti-diarrhoeal drug Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 15 IND-SWIFT Laboratories will be launching an anti-diarrhoeal molecule, Nitazoxanide, for the first time in Asia. This is the first molecule approved by the FDA in 40 years for Gardia, a parasite that causes diarrhoea. It will be the only drug approved for the treatment of diarrhoea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum in children aged 12 months to 11 years. The molecule will be available in India within a year of its global launch by the originator. Ind-Swift has already received approval from the Indian regulatory authorities. Mr V.K. Mehta, Joint Managing Director of the company said in a statement, "Launching of Nitazoxanide is part of the company's business plan of introducing products for the first time in India." Most of the available therapies have low cure rates, low resistance, frequent dosages and long treatment duration, which are not patient-convenient or cost effective. Nitazoxanide is relatively a more effective drug developed in-house by the company's research and development team. It is a three-day therapy against the conventional therapy of one week. Romark Laboratories - the originator for this molecule under the brand Alinia - has predicted the US market size of this molecule to be $100 million in the first year with expected annual growth rate of over 40 per cent. The US market is also expected to grow substantially as the originator is entering into strategic marketing tie-up with Cardinal Health, a Fortune 500 company. Ind-Swift said it targets over Rs 10 crore sales in the first year of its launch and a growth by 50 per cent over the next three years. Besides the Asian markets, the company is also poised to launch the drug in the Latin American and African markets.
