Steel Ministry eases steel supplies to SSIs Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 15 THE Ministry of Steel has decided that the small-scale industries corporations (SSICs) which are interested in procuring iron and steel material from primary steel producers in the private sector such as Ispat, Essar and Jindal Vijaynagar Steel Ltd (JVSL), to meet the local demand, will be allocated material without the benefit of the joint plant committee (JPC) rebate scheme. This, according to an official statement here, will result in saving of freight charges for the small-scale industry customers. States such as Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have agreed to lift material from the private sector primary producers. At a meeting with the SSICs recently, it was also decided that in States where such corporations are not functioning or are inactive, the small units would be allocated iron and steel material through the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC). For this, however, the NSIC will have to submit to the Ministry of Steel a list of the small units to whom material is to be supplied so that there is no duplication of activities. The meeting, the statement said, was held recently under the chairmanship of the Steel Secretary, Ms Binoo Sen, to review the lifting of iron and steel material by the SSICs.
