Sports Industry & Economy - Radio/TV Cricket series: DD seeks details of revenue benefits of Ten Sports Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 15 THE India-Pakistan cricket series may be drawing to an end but the dispute between Ten Sports and Doordarshan is far from over.
National broadcaster Prasar Bharati on Thursday sought details of the revenue benefits to Ten Sports as a result of the matches being available on Doordarshan as well. The two broadcasters were to submit an assessment of the revenue losses to the Supreme Court on Thursday. On the basis of the application filed by Prasar Bharati, a Supreme Court bench, comprising the Chief Justice, Mr V.N. Khare, Mr Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Mr Justice S.B. Sinha, asked Taj India (Pvt) Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of Ten Sports, to file all relevant documents pertaining to the query raised by Prasar Bharati on or before May 3, the next date of hearing. While the national broadcaster wanted to know "the revenue generated by Ten Sports from the telecast of the India-Pakistan cricket series thus far, including the revenue generated as a result of transmission of the logo and advertisements of Ten Sports on Doordarshan," Taj TV disputed the query. It said it had earned no additional revenue as a result of the simultaneous telecast of the series on Doordarshan. The channel had, in fact, suffered losses due to the simulcast on DD, it claimed. The Attorney General, Mr Soli Sorabjee, representing Prasar Bharati, said for the purpose of calculation of losses, the release (advertisement) orders received by the Indian concern of Ten Sports and its sub-distributor, HMA Udyog Ltd, were of extreme importance. It had also sought details of various agreements that Taj Television had entered into.
