Cut in kerosene allocation for Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Civil Supplies Minister, Mr G. Karthikeyan, has expressed strong resentment over the Centre's decision to effect a cut in the kerosene quota for the State.

An official spokesman quoted the Minister as saying in an urgent fax message to the Centre that the cut had come a time when the State Government had been continuously petitioning the Centre for a hike in the quota. This was thoroughly demoralising a response, the Minister said in a communication to the Union Petroleum Minister, Mr Ram Naik.

The State's monthly requirement was 28,978 kilolitres of kerosene. The latest cut had brought down this quota to 22,598 kilolitres. The aggregate shortfall had now amounted to 6,380 kilolitres at the end of a three-year cutting spree. This was a clear injustice meted out to the poorest of the poor, who used kerosene as fuel for cooking as well as fishing purposes.
