Outlook Logistics - Railways Kalindee keen on joint venture with DMRC for metro projects Amit Mitra
Mumbai , April 19 DELHI-based Kalindee Rail Nirman Ltd, which is executing a Rs 50-crore underground railway track-laying contract for the Delhi metro rail project, is exploring the possibility of forming a joint venture with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to bid for similar projects in India and overseas. "We are in the process of submitting the proposal to DMRC and preliminary talks may begin soon. The idea behind the joint venture is to leverage on both our strengths in the areas of construction and operation of metro rail systems," according to Mr S.D. Sharma, Managing Director of Kalindee Rail Nirman. The company, which has developed expertise in laying ballasted and ballast-less railway track for metro projects, sees a lot of potential for such contracts in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar, apart from other metros like Chennai and Bangalore. "Laying of such tracks requires specialised technology, as the metro track will have to support high-speed trains, with speeds reaching up to 230 km per hour, against the maximum speed of the over-ground rail network of the Indian Railways of 160 km per hour," Mr Sharma told Business Line. The company, which is engaged in execution of major railway signalling and telecommunication projects in the country, has completed commissioning of the automatic fare collection system at 10 stations for the Delhi metro project and is in the process of laying 36 km of track for the project, including 22 km of ballast-less track. Kalindee has executed projects spread far and wide in the country including gauge conversion project, new railway line construction, modernisation of railway yards, upgradation of railway sidings in ports, power plants, petroleum sidings, access control systems for metro rail, fibre optic networks, etc. Mr Sharma said the company, which recently bagged a Rs 8.3-crore order from East-Central Railways for setting up signalling facilities, is all set to bag another Rs 20-crore order for laying of railway track through a tunnel for the hydro-power project that is being set up at Chhattisgarh. "We have initiated a move to foray into overseas market and we are hopeful of getting a major order from Malaysia," he said.
