Letters Safeguarding rice
This refers to "Is rice now Oryza MNC?" (Business Line, April 20): The article highlighted the urgent measures needed to prevent rice, much of the world's staple food, from passing into the hands of theMNCs by way of unfair patents and genetic modifications. Given that the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) was signed by 170 countries as against 150 signatories for TRIPS, CBD will be the right forum to take up the legal battle against the bio-piracy by MNCs. However, before taking up any such legal battles, India should augment its negotiating power, which it has so far failed to do, by enlisting the aid of South Asian and other countries which face similar problems. Importantly, now with the EU countries as potent allies, India can assert its claims more confidently . Any delay or failure to safeguard the Indian rice varieties will place the country's food security at the mercy of theMNCs.
