Vimala Vasan

Abu Dhabi , April 20

ELECTRONICS hardware exports registered a 66 per cent jump in December 2003, and is poised to grow at an accelerated pace during 2003-04.

Mr Kamal Vachani, Regional Director for the UAE and Middle East of Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), said that riding primarily on the back of a surge in electronics hardware exports during the month of December, exports for the year 2003-04 are poised to hit a record figure. In December 2003, the electronics hardware exports stood at $196.5 million, up by 66 per cent over the$117.82 million in the same period in 2002. "We are identifying the commodities and destinations, which have contributed to the accelerated growth in exports with a view to consolidate our export growth in electronics hardware and to build on it, Mr Vachani, said.

The growth in electronics hardware exports during April-December 2003 was 26 per cent higher than the same period in the previous year. In absolute terms, it was worth $1226.52 million as against $968.47 million in the previous year.

If the same trend sustains this year, it is likely that the total annualised export of electronics hardware will be in the range of $1478 million.
