Thiruvananthapuram , April 21

THE city-based Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has published a booklet on diabetes.

Called `Living with diabetes', the booklet in Malayalam has been prepared as part of the organisation's public health awareness programme.

Releasing the booklet in the city today, Dr M.S. Valiathan, Executive Vice-President, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, pointed out that the public need to have access to authentic and easy to understand sources of information on a range of health-related issues. Booklets, such as the one on diabetes published by the SCTIMST, will help educate the public on various health issues, he said.

Often believed to be a `modern' illness, diabetes is actually an ancient disease, he said. For instance, several ayurvedic texts published over 2,000 years ago mention diabetes and even declare that it is a lifestyle disease, Dr Valiathan pointed out. Today, however, with more sedentary lifestyles, diabetes has become a cause for concern, he said and added that physical activity and diet control can help prevent its occurrence.

Published with financial support from the State Bank of Travancore, the booklet `Living with diabetes' is a comprehensive primer on the disease. Besides, establishing the severity of the disease in today's world, the booklet also contains detailed information on the causes of diabetes, methods to prevent and control it, and so on. It is the sixth such booklet published by the SCTIMST as part of its public health awareness project. Other booklets have covered themes such as heart disease, hypertension, epilepsy and AIDS.

Mr Amitabha Guha, Managing Director, State Bank of Travancore, Dr K. Mohandas, Director, SCTIMST and Dr Ashok Kumar Das, Chief Executive Officer, Indian Institute of Diabetes were among those present on the occasion.
