Railways SCR registers marginal growth in freight loading Our Bureau
Hyderabad , April 21 THE South Central Railway (SCR) has recorded a marginal growth of 2.7 per cent in the freight loading performance and a 5 per cent growth in passenger movement during the year 2003-04. The SCR registered freight movement of 44.78 million tonnes during the year as against 43.59 m.t., 1.22 m.t. short of the 46-m.t. target set by the Railway Board. "We could achieve this despite a sharp fall in loading during the first nine months of the year. This is largely because of the spurt in demand in the last quarter," a top SCR official said commenting on the performance. During the nine-month period, the freight load fell to 31.58 m.t. from 35.52 m.t. in the same period last financial year. However, SCR could make this up in the last quarter as it recorded a freight load of 13.19 m.t. (11.06 m.t). Passenger movement during the year was put at 195.65 million (186.25 million). Complimenting the zone's performance, Mr R.K. Singh, Chairman of Railway Board, recently said it pressed 124 specials into service for fodder and 50 for transporting mangoes. He also praised the SCR for running special trains during last year's Pushkarams in the State. The gross earnings of the zone stood at Rs 3,683 crore (approximate) as against a revised target of Rs 3,680.90 crore for 2003-04. The revised earnings (following the bifurcation of Hubli) for previous year was Rs 3,407.96 crore.
