Kalam urges BEL to become key player in global markets

Bangalore , April 21

THE President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today exhorted Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) to become a key global player in defence electronics, radars and nanotechnology.

His dream is to see the defence public sector major become "a multi-billion-dollar Indian MNC" and at the same time, a household name in consumer electronics, Dr Kalam said in a videoconference from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

As BEL closed its year-long golden jubilee celebrations, the President had a special 30-minute interaction during which he shared with the audience his experience with and vision for BEL. Some 7,000 employees and invitees were gathered here for the event.

Having watched BEL grow from its early years, he said he wanted the company to transform itself into an international leader in radars for example, by producing a highly accurate version that can pick a 0.1 sq.m target at a range over 1,000 km away.
