Forecasting rains

This is with reference to the editorial tilted "Making most of the monsoon" (Business Line, April 22). For an agricultural economy dependant on the monsoons such as India there is a need to predict the rains accurately to plan ahead. Recent studies have shown that the forecast in the farmer's almanac, called the panchang is very close to the scientific forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department. It is, therefore, imperative for the IMD to study the reliability of the Panchang.

C. Ramesh,

Keeramangalam (TN)
