Pantaloon ties up with K.J. Somaiya Institute for retail management course

PANTALOON Retail (India) Ltd has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management & Research Studies to offer a specialised course in retail management.

The first batch of students will join the course, spread over 18 months, in June. The first 12 months of the course will be devoted to academics, and the next six to acquiring on job training with Pantaloon Retail at stores spread across the country including the Pantaloon Family Stores, Big Bazaar, Food Bazaar, Central, etc.

According to an official statement, the course has been designed by academicians from K.J. Somaiya Institute with key inputs being provided from Pantaloon Retail.

The statement quoting the Chief Executive Officer, Pantaloon Retail, Mr Kishore Biyani, said: "We at Pantaloon are proud to associate ourselves with this unique initiative which will benefit the retail industry, which faces a shortage of specialised and retail specific manpower."

Candidates will be chosen through an all-India online test, group discussion and interview. The course has a strong operational focus; all students will learn the ropes of retail in Pantaloon's stores every Saturday and Sunday in the first 12 months.

Prof. Narasimhan, Director-General, K.J. Somaiya Institute, said: "A unique benefit for the students of the course will be that all of them will be placed with Pantaloon Retail on successful completion of the course at a managerial level."

The company has a presence in lifestyle and value retailing through Pantaloon (high fashion departmental stores), Central (seamless malls), Big Bazaar (discount hypermarket), and Food Bazaar (food and grocery stores).
