The Hindu Business Line : Access electoral roll data through SMS

ESCOTEL, one of the leading cellular operators in the country, has announced a new service offered in association with the Election Commission whereby the public can access electoral roll data on their Escotel mobile through SMS.

As a result, not only will the information reach more public, but also provide easier access to information as it will be available from multiple points.

All Escotel mobile customers can avail this facility at normal SMS rate. To access the new service, all a customer has to send ELE followed by his voter's identity card number as SMS to 444.

Launching the service here on Saturday, Mr B.B. Tandon, Election Commissioner said that contributions from private sector in terms of electoral information updates through SMS would help build an efficient public information system and make it convenient for the public to access the information they require and exercise their right to vote.

Mr P.J. Thomas, Principal Secretary and Chief Electoral Officer said that by making the public information system more effective, the company is doing a tremendous job in reaching the electoral data updates to the public through SMS.

Commenting on the service, Mr Gyanesh Kumar, District Collector and Returning Officer said that improving the efficiency of the public information system is a continuous endeavour.

The company has taken the initiative towards this by utilising the SMS platform to make available electoral roll data to its customer base, he said.

Mr B. Ramakrishna, Chief Operating Officer, Escotel Kerala said that SMS is proving to be a very powerful tool facilitating a whole array of value added servicesand is useful in providing a wide variety of information to customers.
