Some honchos didn't make it to the booth

Mumbai , April 26

MR Adi Godrej, Chairman, Godrej Group was unable to exercise his franchise on Monday. The industrialist's name was omitted from the polling list.

While other industrialists who live in the prestigious Mumbai South constituency like Mr Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of the Reliance Group and Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons cast their votes, it is believed that Mr Kumaramangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group was unable to go to the polling station because of a series of meetings.

In Mumbai, there was a high percentage of voters who were unable to exercise their franchise, as their names were not on the list.

A major lapse in the roll revision exercise as well as glaring errors in building names and locations created confusion in many constituencies. Entire buildings and housing societies have been omitted from voting lists.

While the exact number of voters who could not vote could not be determined, the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr R.K. Bhargava, said the matter would be looked into.

He acknowledged it was possible that here was a problem because of the ``intensive revision of the rolls'' that is carried out every five years.

After the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, the process of ``refreshing'' the rolls was begun and the CEO said every media and method had been used to alert voters to ensure that their names were on the list by March 29 this year. However, the CEO could not explain how entire buildings and housing societies had been left out from the list.

The confusion seems to have arisen from the fact that the election office did not make it clear that the old rolls would be null and void or, in bureaucratic language, ``the old rolls become a list of record.''
