PerkinElmer sets up joint venture with Labindia

A GLOBAL provider of drug discovery, life science research and analytical solutions, PerkinElmer Inc has entered into a 51:49 joint venture with Labindia Instruments to tap the life sciences and analytical instrumentation market in the country.

PerkinElmer India Pvt Ltd will look to market its products in the environment, chemical analysis, pharmaceuticals and genetic screening segments, Mr David Spaight, Vice-President with the company told Business Line.

The joint venture company will be headquartered in Thane with demonstration facilities and sales offices in Mumbai, Thane, New Delhi, Chennai, Baroda, Pune, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kolkata and Bangalore. It will employ 180 people dedicated to direct sales, service, technical support and administration.

While PerkinElmer has a global sales of $1.5 billion sales, a lion's share of about $1.1 billion comes from life sciences and analytical services. The company expects to mop up a sales of about $25 million from India this year, he said.

He pointed out that India was among the fastest growing markets, after China and the growth was being driven by more companies becoming environment-conscious, the pharma segment looking at drug discovery and original research and the emergence of the genetic screening as a medical practice.

Mr Shriram Bhalerao, Managing Director, PerkinElmer in India said that drug companies, hospitals, regulatory authorities and state governments were using or had expressed interest in buying equipment to control pollution or improve quality.

Elaborating on the benefits of genetic screening, company top brass said, that the procedure helped highlight illnesses that an infant is perceptible to. The disease is nipped by better medical or diet-related treatment of the mother or the infant. This saves the life of the infant, besides bringing down the cost of treatment, as the disease is brought under control before it becomes full-blown.
