Radio/TV Win 94.6 to go off air again on licence fee issue in Mumbai Our Bureau
Mumbai , April 28 THE spectre of licence fees for FM radio has reared its head again. Millenium Broadcast's Win 94.6, one of India private FM radio stations, will go off air on April 29. The deadline for paying licence fees ends on April 29. ``We are shutting our station because of the licence fees,'' said a senior official of Millenium Broadcast. Millenium Broadcast is promoted by the Salgaocar Group and was one of the earliest entrants in Mumbai's private FM scenario. The Government is yet to take a decision on the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommendation suggesting deferment of license fees by radio stations. Win 94.6 went off air on May 27, 2003 to protest against the high license fees. Private FM Radio has been making frantic efforts to bring the Government attention towards rationalisation of license fees. Time and again, the industry has been stating that a closure of FM stations is imminent as it cannot afford to pay the annual license fees, which are way above the radio stations' earning capacity. ``If the Government acts on this issue soon, we would evaluate possibilities of returning,'' Mr Gautam Radia, CEO, Millenium Broadcast, said.
