NITK submits Rs 2.05-cr project proposal for rural development

The project proposals by nearly 50 faculty members of NITK concentrate on use of technology for rural development.

Mangalore , April 28

THE National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, has submitted 18 project proposals on rural development to the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

The Director of NITK, Dr S.S. Murthy, told Business Line at Surathkal on Wednesday that the Rural Technology Centre of NITK had submitted a Rs 2.05-crore project proposal to the DST for rural development.

The project proposals by nearly 50 faculty members of NITK, almost one-third of the faculty, concentrate on use of technology for rural development.

Importance has been given to sectors such as healthcare, energy services, water supply and infrastructure development in rural areas.

Information technology tools figure prominently in these rural development projects. Most of the proposals are of the duration of two to three years. As the coastal region has a good potential for hydro-power generation, the proposal envisages establishment of power generation units for remote locations in rural areas.

In its endeavour to take IT tools for rural areas, the centre has proposals for multimedia-based rural primary education programme.

There are also proposals on the development of software and hardware for Internet technology and tele-medicine technology to villages.

The list includes a proposal for the development of a customised technology for rural water supply, sanitation and water harvesting.

Even nature cure facility and yoga and meditation centres figure in the list of 18 proposals.

Making use of the industrial wastes for rural industries has been highlighted in these proposals. Development of pottery products from iron-ore waste tailings and development of low-temperature glazes for terracotta products from fly ash are among them.

The centre also proposes to develop fly-ash-based decorate and roof tiles for rural tile industries.

With regard to rural infrastructure, the centre has proposals for lighting and water pumping systems for houses in a remote village.

A proposal on the development of sub-base material for rural road also figures in the list.
