Animals & Livestock Call for breed development to spur AP dairy sector Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , April 28 THERE is an urgent need to develop better breeds to improve milk yields and bring about qualitative changes in the dairy sector and veterinarians should work in that direction, Mr A. Tulasi Rao, Chairman of Visakha Co-operative Dairy, has said. He was the chief guest at a meeting organised on the occasion of World Veterinarians Day on Wednesday. He said the Visakha Dairy, one of the leading co-operative dairies in the State, would provide the necessary infrastructure and funds for the purpose. Prof V. Jayarama Krishna, former dean of veterinary sciences department, Acharya N.G Ranga Agricultural University, said India was the world's top producer of milk, with a production of 97.3 million tonnes, and nearly 80 million families were in the dairy sector. There were as many as 120 million milch animals in the country. Even one per cent increase in milk productivity would add Rs 826 crore to the gross national product, he said. Andhra Pradesh was in the fifth position in milk production in the country with 65.98 lakh tonnes.
