THE National Research Development Corporation under the Ministry of Science and Technology has conferred an award on Coir Board's Central Coir Research Institute for the development of an improved mild steel handloom, Anugraha, for weaving coir geo-textiles.
The scientific team of the research institute had recently developed a mild steel handloom for weaving coir geo-textiles without any drudgery for even women workers, Mr C. Chandran, Chairman, Coir Board said. The NRDC through a duly appointed jury selected CCRI for the award from several entries received from different parts of the country.
The world requirement for geo-textiles is estimated at around 1,400 million sq. metres and the share of coir geo-textiles is only around 2 per cent. Provided coir geo-textiles are produced in a cost effective manner, there is great potential to raise their share to 10 per cent, Mr Chandran said. At present, male workers weave coir geo-textiles on traditional wooden handlooms with heavy structure. The weaving involves drudgery due to the strain in operation of the looms.
