IT Training Keonics plans Linux training centre in Karnataka Rukmini Priyadarshini
Bangalore , May 2 KARNATAKA State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Keonics) is planning to set up a Linux training centre in Karnataka to cater to the needs of students and graduates, given the increased spread of Linux adoption and deployment in the State and in the country. Speaking to Business Line, the Director, Operations, Mr T.R. Kulkarni, said Keonics was planning to enter into a partnership with corporates such as IBM or Red Hat for providing the course content. The corporation also plans to develop IT parks at Mangalore and Mysore, to cater to the requirements of regional entrepreneurs and enable the spread of the IT/ITES business to these centres as well. "We will develop this jointly with private partners and plan to call for an expression of interest from private developers soon,'' Mr Kulkarni said. Keonics, which had a turnover of Rs 12 crore last year, expects to implement more revenue-generating activities through the year while also reducing manpower to 100 people from 130 this year and further to 70 next year. Employees have the option of taking voluntary retirement or might be redeployed in other government departments where their IT skills will prove useful, Mr Kulkarni said. "Our consultancy business has seen traction,'' Mr Kulkarni said, adding that numerous government departments and institutions, such as the Food and Civil Supplies Department, Karnataka Silk industries Corporation and others have approached it for IT consultancy in their computerisation and networking efforts. "Be it a systems study, LAN configuration, Web site development or manpower training, Keonics has gained recognition among State bodies for such capabilities,'' according to Mr Kulkarni. The corporation is also planning to add about 20 more centres to the 81 IT education and training centres it operates across the State. "Despite the slowdown in the computer education businesses generally, we are able to generate interest and traffic since we are able to maintain our standards and price line," Mr Kulkarni said, adding that Keonics had obtained the ISO 9001-2000 for quality education in IT/ITES. It also plans to train students who have completed their pre-university education in the basics of computer skills, free of cost, at about 76 centres and has sought a Central Government grant towards it. Over 1,200 `typing institutes' across the State have been adopted by Keonics where it will provide training in IT skills, secretarial training and course material in various office-ware such as Microsoft Office at nominal costs, Mr Kulkarni said.
