Climate & Weather Indo-German meet on climate change on May 12 Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 3 ENVIRONMENT experts from India and Germany will be taking part in a daylong workshop on `Climate change adaptation in India' being held here on May 12 to discuss climate change and its effect on natural and human systems. The workshop, according to an official statement here, is being organised by the Indo-German bilateral project "Watershed management" under the German Technical Agency (GTZ) to generate awareness of adaptation among Indian farmers affected by climate change. The use of adaptation offers a practical response strategy to the key problems of global environment and the needs and problems faced by the poor. Recent surveys, the statement said, had shown that climate change which includes drought, flood, extreme temperatures and other natural hazards have been affecting the poor in developing countries, as most of them are dependent on natural resources. It is common knowledge that the capacity to respond to climate change is the lowest in the developing countries. In India, almost 75 per cent of the population relies directly or indirectly on agriculture for livelihood. Climate change has been taking its toll each year in terms of human lives and livelihood and has had profound effects on agriculture, livestock, water resources, forestry and fisheries.
