FedEx targets two niche markets

Nina Varghese

Chennai , May 4

FEDERAL Express Corporation (FedEx) has launched products targeting two rapidly growing niche markets in India - the gems and jewellery exports and the express service for university students.

Mr Birender Ahluwalia, Marketing Manager, Middle East and India, FedEx, said that the company introduced one of its international express solutions for the $12-billion gems and jewellery export market.

He said the company has always catered to niche markets and this was another step in that direction, especially since the gem and jewellery segment was such a large one.

The exports were mainly to the US and other key centres in Europe.

FedEx has come out with the overnight letter, an express service for students who are applying for admission in foreign universities, a segment that has been growing over the past few years.

Mr Ahluwalia said that the envelopes are made from special recycled paper.

The packaging is free of cost, he said. Though the majority of the mail goes to the US, the other key areas are France, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Besides solutions for the other export sectors such as the ready-made garment and leather industry, the company has earlier introduced international priority for heavy freight, starting at 68 kg apiece.

These consignments were too heavy for the courier and created a new market segment.

At present, FedEx has 26 service outlets, which are located in industrial and residential areas.

Mr Ahluwalia said that FedEx plans to increase the number of service outlets across other cities too.
