Bangalore , May 4

GENERAL Motors India has registered a 74 per cent growth in sales of its cars in April 2004 compared with the figures in the same month last year.

"The continuing growth in sales of GM in India is primarily due to the tremendous response to Chevrolet Optra and Opel Corsa models. Spurred by this success, we plan to bring in more new and exciting Chevrolet products specifically designed for the Indian market," Mr P. Balendran, Vice-President (Corporate Affairs), General Motors India, said in a press statement.

The company sold a total of 1,401 cars in April 2004 compared with 805 in April 2003 registering a growth of 74.04 per cent. Chevrolet Optra, the luxury sedan, sold 607 cars, while Corsa sales went up to 774 cars. There have been some production constraints for existing models as the company had to share the capacity to produce some Tavera models that is getting launched shortly. But the backlog of Optra and Corsas will be cleared soon, Mr Balendran said.

Since its India launch late last year, nearly 8,000 Chevrolet Optra cars have been sold so far.
