Exhibition on `illusions' at BITM

Our Bureau

Kolkata , May 4

THERE is nothing unusual in seeing oneself in a mirror, but it becomes an experience if one sees only one's back in the reflection. This, and other scientifically created "illusions" are on display at an exhibition here at the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM).

BITM, a national science museum under the National Council of Science Museums, Union Ministry of Tourism & Culture, has organised the exhibition to coincide its 45th anniversary and "year of scientific awareness" in 2004. The exhibition will continue till June 17.

The special exhibition explains a comprehensive story of the world of deception. It comprises 55 surprising tricks following scientific principles - optical illusions in two and three dimensions, tricks with perception of colours, reflection, audio illusions and tricks on human senses.

A new gallery with 7,000 square feet area and a special ambience has been created where a lifeless bust suddenly speaks out and continues to recite a popular rhyme or a pair of pitcher murmur or a deep well appears on the concrete floor or more amazingly stare at strange dots and a teapot comes out floating.

The displays play on visitors senses, plays with their limitations or psychological and physiological apprehensions with scientific reasoning.
