Rain pounds Lakshadweep

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , May 5

THE slow-moving but hyperactive low-pressure system, stationed 100 km north-east of Amin Divi in Lakshadweep on Wednesday evening, pounded the islands to a record-breaking 43 cm of rain that fell during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. earlier in the morning.

The previous best 24-hour rainfall recorded in the islands off the Kerala coast was 31 cm recorded on June 12, 1992.

Disclosing this to Business Line, Mr M.D. Ramachandran, Director, Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, said the wet weather triggered in the wake of the system would continue for as long as it remained close to the Kerala coast even as it moved towards north and northwest. The influence would become gradually less pronounced as the system drifted away from the coast.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Kerala and Lakshadweep. Apart from Amin Divi, the following places received heavy rainfall (in cm):

Agathy - 10, Kodungalloor - nine, Chittoor and Hosdurg - seven each, Alappuzha and Kasaragod - six each, Kannur, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram City, Aluva, Haripad, Nedumangad and Tiruvalla - five each, Cochin International Airport, Old Kochi Airport, Thiruvananthapuram Airport, Manjeri and Thrithala - four each.

Forecast for next 24 hours: Rain/thundershowers are likely at most places over coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep, at many places in Tamil Nadu and interior Karnataka.

Heavy rainfall: The Met Department has forecast heavy rainfall at a few places, with isolated very heavy falls over Kerala, Lakshadweep and Coastal Karnataka. Isolated heavy falls are also likely over interior Karnataka, South Konkan and Goa.
