The Hindu Business Line : Japanese way to quality lauded

THE Indian industry should adopt the Japanese management practices, for as the western management styles may not be that suitable in the Indian context, said Mr R. Rama Rao, General Manager, NTPC, Simhadri.

He was delivering the key-note address at the inaugural of a two-day seminar on `Kaizen and 5 S', organised by the local chapter of the Quality Circle Forum of India, which began here on Wednesday.

Mr Rama Rao said Kaizen was a method of bringing about an incremental improvement in products and processes, practised successfully by the Japanese, as opposed to the more spectacular path of innovation chosen by western companies.

"Innovation calls for drastic changes in attitudes and often it involves huge investment. Kaizen is less spectacular, but more effective,'' he opined. He also commended the "5 S" strategy of Japanese companies (Seiri - organising, seiton - neatness, seiso - cleaning, seiketus - standardisation, and shitsuke - discipline).

Delegates from Visakhapatnam steel plant, LG Polymers, Coramandel Fertilisers and other local units, also participated in the seminar.
