THE construction industry in Tiruchi district is in a bind over the sudden increase in the prices of steel and cement in the last two months.

According to Mr S. Suriamoorthy, President, Builders Association of India (BAI), Tiruchi Chapter, the hike has been unprecedented, as there has been no rise in the cost of raw material for both the products.

While cement prices have increased from Rs 120 to Rs 170, the steel prices have shot up from Rs 15,000 per tonne to more than Rs 30,000. The hike has halted construction activity by more than 50 per cent.
