Letters WTO rejects agri-subsidies
This is with reference to the editorial "WTO rejects agri-subsidies" (Business Line, May 6). The ruling of the WTO declaring US cotton subsidies unfair is welcome. The US subsidies to its cotton producers have lowered the price of cotton worldwide, making it almost impossible for producers in the developing countries to compete with the US farmers. This was a bone of contention in the Cancun meet. The importance of the rulings lies in the fact that this is the first case which looks at the effect of export subsidies on agricultural products. One hopes that the recent ruling of the WTO will augment the case of the developing countries G-22 and strengthen their voice in the WTO.
