`Kerosene not sanctioned for fisheries sector'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Food and Culture, Mr G. Karthikeyan, has said that the Centre had not yet sanctioned a separate kerosene quota for the fisheries sector despite repeated representations made by the State Government.

An official spokesman quoted the Minister as saying here that the statement of the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Ram Naik, here on Wednesday on this issue was misleading.

It was left to the State Government to carve out a quota for the fisheries sector from the kerosene allocated by the Centre for public distribution. The latter had, on its part, been steadily reducing the overall quota to the State.

The reduction effected during the last three years alone totalled 58,464 tonnes. Over 12,000 tonnes were cut during the last month.
