Electrical Goods Low voltage fuses, switchgear, control gear go off BIS list K.R. Srivats
New Delhi , May 10 COMPANIES exporting low voltage switchgears and control gear, high voltage fuses and self-ballasted lamps to India have a cause for cheer. Such entities would no longer be required to register themselves with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or comply with the specified Indian quality standard as applicable to similar goods produced in the country. The Director General of Foreign Trade has now deleted as many as nine items from the list of 150-odd items whose imports are subject to the compliance of the mandatory Indian quality standard as applicable to domestic goods. For compliance of this requirement, all manufacturers /exporters of these products to India are required to register themselves with the BIS. The items that have now been deleted from the existing list include low voltage fuses and low voltage switchgear and control gear items such as circuit breakers, switches, contactors, motor starters and control circuit devices. As a safeguard measure for domestic industry, the Government had through the Exim policy 2001-02 stipulated that imports of 131 products can be made only after compliance of the Indian quality standards as applicable to domestic goods.
