Kochi , May 12

THE Amrita Varsity and ISRO will launch a new initiative, the Satellite-based education and research network, on May 15.

This network will seamlessly connect the four campuses of Amrita University at Amritapuri (Kollam), Coimbatore, Kochi and Bangalore via satellite and will be the first of its kind in the country, a press release issued here has said.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a deemed university started by Mata Amritandamayi Devi, which will spearhead this new initiative — Amrita-ISRO Satellite-Based Education & Research Network for the new millennium.

The initiative has the support from leading technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard (H-P) India, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Tata Consultancy Services, Cadence, Hero Honda Motors, Ashok Leyland and Dax Networks.

This unique `university-government-industry' partnership will be a model for the entire nation in unleashing the potential of satellite, IT, Web and networking for education and research across educational institutions in the country, the release said.

The initiative is also expected to synergise the benefits of inter-disciplinary learning and experiential knowledge arising out of research applications. Once operational, it is expected to facilitate leading experts from around the world to have academic interaction live from a single centre to students, academicians and researchers at multiple locations across the country.
