Hyderabad , May 12

DR Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was unanimously elected as leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Wednesday. He is expected to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on May 14.

Following the election, a Congress party delegation led by Mr P. Upendra went to Raj Bhavan and handed over a letter to the State Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, stating that Dr Reddy has been elected as the CLP leader.

Subsequently, the Governor wrote a letter to Dr Reddy inviting him to form the Government.

Dr Reddy later visited Raj Bhavan and accepted the Governor's invitation to form the Government. Later, he left for New Delhi to meet the Party President, Ms Sonia Gandhi.The CLP, which met in the presence of AICC observers Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mr Shivraj Patil, first passed a resolution leaving the issue of CLP leadership to All India Congress Committee President, Ms Sonia Gandhi.

Following this, the AICC observers spoke to Ms Gandhi on phone and informed the CLP that her choice was Dr Reddy, said Congress MLA Mr K.R. Suresh Reddy.

Speaking to newspersons after the CLP meeting, Mr Reddy said that the CLP had unanimously adopted another resolution endorsing the decision of Ms Sonia Gandhi to make Dr Reddy the CLP leader.

The resolution was proposed by the AP Congress Committee President, Mr D. Srinivas, and seconded by senior Congress leader Mr Koneru Ranga Rao.

He also said that the swearing-in ceremony would be held either at the Lal Bahadur Stadium or at the Nizam College grounds. Apart from the AICC observers, Mr Srinivas and Dr Reddy addressed the CLP meeting that lasted for nearly three hours. The meeting was attended by 179 Congress legislators and two independent MLAs.
