Close contest for viewership among news channels

ELECTION 2004 is a big media event and channels have left no stone unturned to ensure that viewership interest is retained.

Going by the latest viewership numbers, the gap between Aaj Tak, NDTV India and Star News has been narrowing.

For the week ended May 1, 2004, Aaj Tak's share stood at 24.7 per cent, while NDTV India's stood at 21.6 per cent and Star News had a share of 19.8 per cent. During the earlier week, TV Today's news channel had a share of 26.2 per cent, while NDTV India and Star News had shares of 19.8 per cent and 20.5 per cent respectively.

Interestingly similar trends are witnessed in the Hindi-speaking markets as well. But in the Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh markets, NDTV India topped the news viewership with a market share of 27.7 per cent.

Zee News occupies the second spot with 22.7 per cent share and Star News clocked 19.4 per cent while Aaj Tak had a 16.5 per cent share.

In the English news category, NDTV 24x7 has held onto its leadership position with a market share of 43.2 per cent for the week of May 1, 2004 while CNBC is second with 29.7 per cent followed by BBC World, Headlines Today and CNN.
