Chennai , May 13

SERENDIP Airlines, a Colombo-based airline, has started operating freighters to Chennai and Bangalore.

The airline operates three B 727 freighters from Kuala Lumpur to Chennai and back on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the airline operates the Boeing freighters on the Kuala Lumpur- Bangalore-Kuala Lumpur sector.

Mr Peter Raykar, Director, Marketing and Development, Serendip Airlines, told Business Line that the airline plans to take advantage of the open skies policy between India and Sri Lanka and start passenger services connecting Tiruchi with Colombo. The service is expected to start by mid-June, he said.

Mr Raykar said that the airline has permission to fly to 18 destinations in India. The airline plans to use Boeing 737 series for short haul passenger flights. Serendip Airlines is a subsidiary of the US-based Nat Group, Mr Raykar said.
