Naveen Jindal wins Kurukshetra for Cong

Ambarish Mukherjee

New Delhi , May 13

THE man who fought and won for every Indian citizen the right to fly the national flag, is flying high today. Mr Naveen Jindal, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL), has won the Lok Sabha seat from Kurukshetra, Haryana for the Congress by 1,30,000 votes, defeating the Haryana Chief Minister's son, Mr Abhay Chautala.

It was in the early 90s when a Government inspector, during a routine visit to one of the Jindal steel plants, objected to the national flag being flown within the factory premises since it violated the law.

Mr Jindal took moved the court with a public interest litigation. The battle went on for 10 years with the Supreme Court finally declaring the right to fly the national flag with respect and dignity as a fundamental right.

Kurukshetra is not new for the young industrialist. Nor is politics. His father, Mr O.P. Jindal, contested from Kurukshetra in the last two Lok Sabha elections and from Hisar constituency in the Haryana Assembly elections, when Mr Naveen Jindal was his election in-charge.

A person with versatile interests, the young industrialist is also an excellent sportsman. Only last month the Indian shooting team won the silver medal at the SAF Games under his captaincy.

He is also the current national champion and national record holder in skeet shooting. He has also represented India in the Asian Games.

At the chambers, Mr Jindal has been quite active.

He is currently Chairman of the Young Leaders Forum and National Executive Committee member of the FICCI.
