Orchid Chem plans to sell Cefazolin in US

Chennai , May 14

ORCHID Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals on Friday announced that it had applied for permission in the US to sell Cefazolin, a formulation (finished drug), there. This is the company's first attempt to sell formulations in the US.

A company press release said it had filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the US authorities for its injectable, Cefazolin. The company plans to file 15 applications in the current financial year, said the release.

The formulation would be made in its plant located at Irungattukottai, near Chennai. In December 2003, the US Food and Drug Administration approved its bulk drug manufacturing facility for Cefazolin.

The ANDA application is linked to Orchid's distribution deal with the Canada-based Apotex in 2003.
