Outsourcing GE, HSBC to set up BPOs in Kolkata Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 14 GE CAPITAL and HSBC have firmed up plans to set up Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centres in Kolkata, said Mr Manabendra Mukherjee, West Bengal's Minister for Information Technology. Speaking to newspersons here today, Mr Mukherjee said GE Capital and HSBC have asked the State Government for land to set up BPO centres. The Department of Information Technology, Government of West Bengal, has begun identifying the land that could be offered to these companies. Although the development is three weeks old, a formal announcement was not made earlier in view of the guidelines issued by the Election Commission. Mr Mukherjee said the West Bengal Government had given the IT department 40 acres of land at the Rajarhat New Township near the city to accommodate requests from IT companies who wished to set up operations. The State Government has been requested to earmark an additional 200 acres at Rajarhat for the IT sector. Mr Mukherjee quoted a recently article in the Far Eastern Economic Review, which described Kolkata as a preferred destination for IT companies. He said earlier West Bengal had suffered from a perception problem. Since that issue has been effectively addressed now, the next step is to hold road shows in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai in the coming months to attract investors.
