AP to introduce Right to Information Bill

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , May 15

THE new Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that the Right to Information Bill, on the lines of a similar legislation formulated by the Union Government, would be introduced in the State Legislative Assembly as soon as possible.

Addressing a "Meet the Press" programme, organised by the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists, Dr Reddy said that he wanted the new legislation for ensuring transparency of Government operations. If necessary, he would also bring the Chief Minister under the purview of Lok Ayukta.

He defended his decision to provide free power to the agriculture sector by saying that it was a productive programme and not a populist measure aimed at garnering votes. He would also offer a special package to the families of those farmers who have committed suicide in the State.

The Chief Minister said that the people should "thank" his predecessor, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu for "developing infrastructure in the 14 sq. km. area" of Hyderabad. His Government would, however, develop the entire area of the State.

He said that the user charges being collected in Government hospitals would be withdrawn, as healthcare should be within the reach of the common man.
