Hardware STMicro begins work on Noida facility; to hire more Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 16 SEMICONDUCTOR major, STMicroelectronics, has started work on a new 25- acre complex at Greater Noida near Delhi and plans to induct 500 engineers in the current year. "We have committed an investment of $100 million in our India operations over the next five years. Our staff strength has grown from four in 1987 to 1,400 now and we are set to hire 500 engineers this year," the Country Human Resource Manager, Mr Praneet Mehrish, told Business Line. As many as 100 engineers will join STMicro's facility in Bangalore, while the rest will be inducted in Noida. Mr Mehrish said that the company's HR policy of not laying off any employees even during recession, inducting new people if selected on campus and work culture had ensured that people were keen to join STMicro. "We do not throw money at anybody. Some of our engineers have joined us without any significant salary increase only because of our work culture. If we made an offer, we made sure that the candidates joined on time," he said. STMicro has been designing integrated circuits and developing software solutions in the country since 1992. The Noida facility is the company's largest design facility outside Europe. Asked if STMicro was planning a manufacturing facility in India, the company's Country Manager, Mr Pradeep Kumar, said that the market for semiconductors in India had not matured enough for any company to set up a manufacturing base. "Setting up a manufacturing plant costs more than $3 billion and until the economics of demand and supply justify the investment, we have no such plans. India, however, offers immense scope for research and development because of its talent base and we plan to fully harness the potential," Mr Kumar said.
