Improving governance

This is with reference to "Sorry to see him go" (Business Line, May 16). Hindu-Muslim clashes have been going on for thousands of years.

Pakistan was born to put an end to this problem. In the last 50 years, the border clashes have costed both the countries untold material and human loss.

Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee has solved the imbroglio at least for some time. He has risen above petty politics and displayed rare statesmanship. He is different from the so-called politicians who have made politics their business.

The NDA losing the elections and the Congress forming the government were not unexpected. As the electorate, we have no choice and are caught between the devil and the deep sea. In the earlier years, there was no party worth the name who could challenge the Congress.

Now, at least there is an Opposition to put a check. People get fed up of the party in power and, with great expectations, vote for the other.

But, most often, nothing much changes. The reason is anti-incumbency or misgovernance. India can hope to become a superpower the day it follows the Chinese system of governance.
