Fingerprints for US visas from July

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 17

THE United States Embassy on Monday announced a new programme to include fingerprints in US visas, which will begin from July this year.

In a statement the US Embassy has said that from July this year, the US consular section in India will collect two electronic fingerprints from most visa applicants.

The fingerprints will be collected at the time of visa application through an inkless process that takes about 30 seconds to complete.

The statement adds that the Consular sections in India will be among the last to introduce this new requirement and by October this year all US Consular sections worldwide will be collecting fingerprints.

However, visas issued prior to the introduction of the fingerprint requirements will continue to be valid through their expiry date.

However, diplomatic, official and international organisation employees are exempt from this process, as are travellers below 14 years and those over 79 years.

All other visa applicants, including government officials applying for tourist visas and domestic servants of diplomats and officials travellers, must have biometric information collected at a visa interview, the statement adds.
