Marriott Delhi gets to `host' Olympic torch

Bangalore , May 22

THE flaming Athens Olympic Torch, which begins its pre-Olympic journey through several cities of the world, will, on its India leg, "stay" at New Delhi Marriot Hotel, Delhi. The coveted honour has been won by Marriott International, which has been appointed the `official supplier' hotel services to the first truly global torch relay.

The Olympic Torch begins its relay on June 4 and will reach India on June 10 before culminating its historic journey during the 100-year celebration of the modern Olympics. More than 11,000 torchbearers will carry the flame passing it to the relay members going through 34 cities, including Ancient Olympia.

"We are thrilled to host the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch as it crossed the world and to be part of the first-ever Global Torch Relay. This journey will serve to unite and infuse the planet with the Olympic spirit," said Mr J.W. Marriott Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International.

India has never hosted the Olympic Games, though Delhi has been the venue of the Asian Games twice in 1951 and 1982. The distinction of the national capital becoming one of the gateways for the Olympic Torch has been seized by several corporations to extend their association to highlight the importance of the Olympic sprit. The Olympic Torch relay will go to Athens on July 9 for its final trek through the host country en route to the Opening ceremony in Greek city.
