Youth face of Cong conspicuous by its absence

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 22

YOUTH was conspicuous by its absence in the 67-member Council of Ministers sworn in today with Dr Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister.

Former Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Ms Selja, was about the only young Congress leader to be inducted into the new Ministry. Incidentally, this was the fifth election contested by Ms Selja, the Congress MP from Hisar in Haryana.

The second-generation high profile Congress leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sandeep Dikshit and Jatin Prasada did not find a berth in Dr Singh's Council. The Gandhi scion, Mr Rahul Gandhi, who has returned as the Member of Parliament from the family pocket borough Amethi, has also apparently decided to stay out of the Government. While the Congress shied away from naming its young leaders as ministers, youth representation from the allies came in the form of Mr Dayanidhi Maran and Dr Anbumani Ramadoss.
