A-I management, union to meet Labour Secy

Mumbai , May 22

REPRESENTATIVES of the Air-India management and the Air-India Employees Guild (A-I EG) will meet the Labour Secretary on Monday to take up the new directives on verification of unions issued by the Central Labour Commissioner.

According to a spokesperson of the Guild, the Labour Commissioner had sought the verification of the strength of the airline unions. He has sought to verify the strength of "craft unions" or unions representing different departments within the airline, such as the technical staff, service engineers, etc. This was against the law, he added.

The A-I ground staff had called a flash strike on Friday evening to protest the directives of the Commissioner. However, the strike was called off later the same evening after the striking union got an assurance from the management that the matter would be taken up with the Labour Secretary on Monday.

The Airport Director, Mr Sudhir Kumar said the strike had little or no impact at Mumbai where it lasted for less than an hour. The strike, which began at around 10.15 pm, was called off by 11.30 pm, he said.

According to Mr Kumar, while there was no A-I flight scheduled during the strike period, Singapore Airlines, which is handled by A-I, deployed their own staff to complete check-in formalities, thus avoiding any disruption in services.
