Free power — Cauvery farmers happy

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The announcement of free power supply by the State Government has made farmers, especially those who have started kuruvai plantation in the Cauvery delta region, happy.

According to sources, with no canal irrigation in place, the farmers of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts depended heavily on rains and pumpsets. Pricing of power supplied to the pumpsets was a heavy burden for them. There are about 49,500 pumpsets in Thanjavur district and 30,000 pumpsets in Tiruvarur district. With no rains in the recent past and the underground water table going down, farmers were forced to use submersible motors to pump water, with high horse power capacity. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board started collecting a fee of Rs 250 per horse power as tariff for a year. Metering has been effected in respect of 501 new connections in Tiruvarur division and 636 in Mannargudi division. Only one instalment of fee has so far been collected.
