Power AP utilities plan 24-hour rural power scheme Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 23 POWER utilities in Andhra Pradesh are considering launching a Rs 1,000-crore special scheme to provide 24-hour quality power to rural areas. The scheme, which will be taken up with financial assistance from Rural Electrical Corporation (REC), is expected to be completed by September, according to Mr A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Chief General Manager of Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd (APTransco). Addressing the workshop on `Impact of free power to agricultural sector: Role media management' here, Mr Reddy said the new Government has given the go-ahead for the scheme. In a statement, he, however, said 24-hour supply depended much on hydel power generation, which in turn depended on inflows in to the reservoirs. On free power to farmers, Mr Reddy said the corporation had taken steps to check against misuse of the scheme. One of the initiatives in this direction included segregation of agriculture and domestic feeders. It was proposed to set up `transformer committees' at village and mandal levels for successful implementation of the scheme.
