Kyoto Protocol

This is with reference to "Kyoto link as EU backs Russia for WTO" (Business Line, May 24). The decision of Russia to sign the Kyoto protocol is promising. However, the US' contribution to global warming is far more than that of anyother country in the world.

Given the facts that the US power sector emissions alone exceed the combined emissions from 146 countries and that the US alone was responsible for about 25 per cent of the 1990 carbon dioxide emissions. Experts predicted that without the participation of the US, the Kyoto Protocol would never be implemented.

Thus, the refusal of the US to ratify the Kyoto protocol undercuts the global efforts to reduce global warming and has acted as the main impediment for other nations to follow Kyoto protocol.

The EU and Russia should therefore take efforts to pressure the US to ratify the Kyoto protocol in the interests of the welfare of people cutting across national boundaries.

C.Ramesh,

Keeramangalam (TN)
